Did YOU get to see him at the Prairieland Feeds Pet Fair - Sept 15/16, 2007?

Boss provided "pony rides" at this great event in Savoy, IL.

Summary: We LOVE a great success story. Cases like Boss are our favorite type of scenario. An owner was unable to keep an older horse any longer. Rather than putting him down, sending him to a sale without concern for his future, or selling him to be slaughtered for human consumption, they called a rescue -- in this case, us. We were full and unable to bring this healthy big gelding here long-term, but we were able to put him together with a family looking for a draft horse for occasional light riding, and companionship to their young draft. Boss left his work at a petting zoo and came to CWER for just a brief period for health checks, hoof care, and to be a part of our 2007 open house and the Sadorus Fun Days event on 8/18/07,  then went home to his new family!!

He went home to the family who are already adoring Prince and Jep to Cheryl & Mike and their family. We're so happy for Boss! What a great retirement home he'll have, and Mike Cross -- our professional farrier -- will continue to provide his hoof care, so we'll get to see Boss and his buddies every 6 weeks or so.

Sadly, Boss finally succumbed to old age in December 2009. One morning he simply chose not to get up at feeding time. He was distant and listless. The vet arrived in a hurry and the decision was made to ease the gentle giant across the rainbow bridge, where he can again run and play like a young foal. Rest in peace, sweet friend.

History: We don't know much of Boss' history. He apparently went to the petting zoo as a 2 year old, and has been there roughly 21 years. His medical records are fine, and although he's a touch overweight (too many treats from the kids?), he's otherwise healthy and happy, cantering around our pasture with the others like a youngster!

WANT TO MEET BOSS? Come to the Prairieland Feeds Pet Fair 9/15-16/07!! Big Boss will even be giving at least a small number of 'pony rides' as he lets our younger, more fit draft horses get their lunch breaks and other rest periods.
