2-year old Quarter Horse Mare |
Cherokee

Cherokee is a yearling sorrel quarter horse mare by a registered* stallion.
Unfortunately, as shown in the 3rd photo above, the poor baby tangled in some
type of wire fencing and has severely injured her right hind leg.
Cherokee's owners were unable to care for her injury, and donated her to
Crosswinds.
Cherokee has a darling personality, is sweet, gentle, and eager to please.
She is also amazingly social. Her leg was swollen to twice its normal size when
she came, and she is still very timid about having it handled, but she seems to
understand that we are only trying to help and is particularly patient for
actual wrapping over the leg. She seems to find comfort in the bandage.
Luckily, she moves well on the leg, and the injury is no where near her hock
or fetlock joints. The vet is optomistic that she will hopefully recover fully.
With the help of Yunan Payaio (an herbal treatment our vet prescribes), the
proud flesh is retreating and hopefully even the scaring will not be too severe.
01/03/04 update: Cherokee's leg still shows
little signs of healing. We continue to treat and bandage it daily, and hope for
more improvement in the days and weeks to come. Socially, she has settled in
wonderfully, and made fast friends with Sandy.
02/08/04 update: Cherokee's leg
continues to make slow progress. The 2nd leg photo, above, shows how much of the
injured area is now clean skin hoping to grow new hair. The central injury area
continues to improve slowly. Unfortunately, the leg remains swollen and its
prognosis is still unclear. Sadly, this little girl may never be fully sound and
"normal" again.
The McMaster family, incredibly supportive and generous donors, have
purchased a winter blanket for Miss Cherokee so that she can spend more of her
time in the pasture with her newfound friends during this unusually bitter
winter. As soon as it arrives, photos will be added.
05/01/04 update: Cherokee was adopted this
weekend to a wonderful, loving family just 45 minutes from Crosswinds, to be a
companion to their other horse and to fully recover her leg. In the future they
hope to use Cherokee for light riding once she is fully healed.
CONGRATULATIONS!!
*Cherokee's sire is Gold Times Two, a registered Gray AQHA
stallion, registration #3467164, by Tee J Howdy Gold and out of Double D Classy
Bar.
