8-year old registered (colorless) POA
pony mare (2000 model) |
Ginger

Summary: Ginger is an
adorable registered POA (pony
of the americas -- appaloosa pony) who never grew her spots.
She was barely handled prior to coming here, and apparently
the handling she did have was rough. She was quite timid of
people, and afraid of any and every new thing. Tory Cross,
junior trainer, has trained Ginger from day one, including her
under saddle training. Unfortunately, while fostered, Ginger
foundered pretty severely. She is pasture comfortable now, but
will almost definitely never ride again. She needs no
medications, just regular hoof care and comfortable living
conditions.
History:
Ginger
came to Crosswinds from the Danville auction, winter 2003. She is a registered POA pony mare
who is red sorrel mare with no white markings whatsoever, not even striped
hooves or mottled markings on her face. Ginger was timid with humans but stands
up for herself well with other horses. While she was getting settled in, she was
stalled in the barn with Merlin, the paint pony who arrived the week before. The
two were then nearly inseparable, and great friends. Ginger fast learned to trust and respect humans, and begs for treats like the 'long timers'.
Ginger's
left front hoof had a nasty vent from an abscess, but otherwise her feet were in
excellent condition. The abscess vent has since grown out with
no soundness issues at all at any time.
March 2004 update:
Thanks to the
incredible generosity of a wonderful pony owner, Francesca Simon, ginger now has a new winter
blanket to get through the rest of this crazy winter weather for 2004. Thank you
so much!
October 2004
update:
Ginger has spent much of the summer on
vacation as a pasture companion to the horse that has now
become butter's new best friend,
while Butter completed her training to go to her new family.
Now that butter has gone home, Ginger will be returning to
Crosswinds soon. We will continue to work on Ginger's fragile
social skills, with no hurry in getting her saddle trained
until the little mare is confident and secure in herself and
in the people around her.
April 2005 update:
Tory and Ginger are
having a lot of fun doing round pen work together. Ginger is
eager to please Tory, and they do very well together. They are
starting to do their round pen work wearing a saddle, and we're
hoping that by mid-summer Ginger will be learning to ride. She
remains a timid girl, but is so much more friendly and social
to work with, and has made a lot of progress in all areas. She
is now happy to be groomed, good about her feet, and more. And
she loves treats!

2005 update:
Ginger rides! And fantastically at that! Over the past
few weeks, Ginger has finished coming out of her shell,
trusting Tory nearly 100%. When Tory and dad tightened
her girth the first time, instead of getting hysterical,
she hopped a bit then stood perfectly. When Tory put her
weight in a stirrup, she stood. When Tory set gently in
the saddle, she stood. When Mike led Ginger forward a
few steps, she walked along like an experienced riding
pony. That same day, they were trotting together in the
round pen off the lead! CONGRATS TORY! AND CONGRATS
GINGER! |

2005 update: |
Ginger
is doing wonderfully in her riding training. Ginger has
mellowed enormously since arriving at Crosswinds, but
remains a little bit easier to spook than most horses.
She sometimes will shy or jump at things that we are
surprised to see her pull away from. She is a joy to
ride, and is well mannered and easy to handle. However,
it is unlikely she will ever be quiet enough and 'bomb
proof' enough to be a beginner's pony, especially for a
small child. She is, however, an ideal size for most
children who start riding in the 7-10 age range, once
they are ready to have an intermediate horse to work
with and trail ride, that they are not likely to outgrow
right away.
Ginger likes to go
out on trails, and explore our local fields and such. We
plan to take her in the trailer to some more challenging
trail areas later this fall or come spring, to expose
her to more varieties of obstacles and conditions. |

2007 update: |
For the
past 2 years, Ginger has been fostered at a local farm,
keeping Miata company. She's been living the high life
on 10+ acres of lush grass, and has gained the weight to
prove it! Sadly, she also foundered badly as a result.
Now, this winter, she and Miata will be
returning to CWER, as their foster family can no longer
care for them. Ginger will require a significant dietary
program to get her back to a healthy weight.
Tory is very much looking forward to the return of this
beautiful pony.

2008 update: |
We
couldn't be happier! Ginger is doing well, although she
will never ride again, and she is going home! She will
live with Twilight and Gin at their new homes as well.
Congrats, Sue B, and most of all, congrats GINGER!!!
