Summary:
"Honey", registered as "Honey's Hot Okie",
arrived to CWER after her owner suffered a personal situation
which required her to sell her farm. She tried to sell Honey,
but the time of year and Illinois hay shortage, combined with
her rushed time frame, kept her from finding Honey a good
owner in time. Her owner wanted only the best for Honey, so
rather than risking auction or the local horse trader from
whom she'd purchased the mare more than a year before, she
chose to donate her to us here at CWER.
Honey
is a well trained western pleasure/trail mount for
intermediate/advanced riders. She appears to have been allowed
to get away with things with a less experienced rider, and
does test her rider some. When settled, she has a reasonable
headset (not "pushing peanuts"; close to level), and
her jog is very smooth and sweet. Given her nervousness her
first ride in our arena, I would not expect that she has shown
much if at all.
She is a great size and confirmation,
with excellent bloodlines, especially on her sire's side. We
look forward to finding Honey a new home as a showing or trail
mount, and get her on track with a new life as soon as we can.
Honey is a nice easy keeper, easy load, stands wonderful
for farrier and bath time. She has had a double caslick and
cannot have babies...she does occationally have diahhrea and
can be controlled with probiotics that cost about $50 per
year.
History:
We don't know a lot of Honey's history; her last mom bought
her over a year ago from a trader, thin and in pretty poor
shape. She's done wonders in bringing Honey into good
condition, nursed her through her surgery, and now is heart
broken at having to let her go. We're honored at the chance to
help her, and Honey.
ABOUT SPONSORING:
Luckily, Honey has been wonderfully cared for and is in
excellent health. She needs some exercise to muscle up, but
has a good winter coat, is at an excellent weight (perhaps
even a touch heavy), her feet are in nice condition, and she
is current on all her medical needs. It's certainly rare for
such a healthy horse to join us here at CWER! We would still
like to have a feed sponsor for Honey, as her feed costs are
approximately $35/month. Her medicine, a simple powder placed
on her feed, is around $50/year, and her former owner sent
months worth with her, so that won't be needed for a while.
She will need bimonthly worming (roughly $5 each), and will of
course need spring shots and coggins if she is still here in
March, at a cost of approximately $100. Even a $5 donation
helps us care for Honey and the other horses here at CWER.
Updates:
October 2005: Honey's adopted! Honey
is now living at Tracy RC's farm, with hagrid and diego, and
where Bob is staying for the winter. Honey's new dad, Jay, has
loved horses for a long time, and has been taking western
riding lessons for 2 years.
Bloodlines: Please
remember that Honey has had surgery, and cannot be bred. Her
top side breeding is VERY, VERY impressive! The mare's side
has little to no records on the Quarter Horse Directory.
