Irish Magic ("Jackie")

| Summary: |
The family who donated Pepper, Twilight Ginger and Jackie
had financial emergencies that made it impossible for them to
continue to care for these three. Unlike many horse owners,
they didn't wait until there was no feed left in the barn and
the horses were emaciated before asking for help. They
contacted us as soon as they knew they would not be able to
care for their 3 properly throughout the winter, and donated
not only the horses but feed, hay and tack to help us to care
for them.
Jackie is turning 19 in 2008, and the best buddy of the
mare, Twilight. She arrived VERY fit, well built, well
muscled, and in very good health. She apparently was a
competitive barrel racer and reigning horse in the past, but
he used her for a trail horse. We're looking forward to
weather and conditions allowing us to get a few rides with
Twilight, then starting to work on finding her a forever home.
"Jackie I was told was a barrel racer and is a reigning
horse both jackie and ginger (twilight) are good trail riding
horses."

Notes: Jackie
arrived a bit overweight but healthy, current on all her
shots and coggins, and ready to ride. She's attached to
Twilight than any other problems seen so far. As weather
allows, we hope to get some nice rides on her and start
looking for the perfect forever home for this broad
chested, strong backed, very very fit performance horse. |

March
2008: What a joy this mare is for trail riding!!!
Jackie's detailed history is below, but briefly this
mare has done it all when it comes to trail work. Once
you've confirmed for her that you DO know how to ride,
she will go about anywhere and do about anything for
you. She reins English and neck reins, has a lope you
could fall asleep on, and an easy walk that could go all
day long. Hope you enjoy the new riding photos, above,
taken this week. You might notice, she's trotting in
that girth-deep water!

April
2008:
Tonight we decided to practice trailer loading, since
she was fussy the day we brought her home from her
former owner. I walked into the trailer carrying a scoop
of grain, and she walked right on behind me! She
proceeded to get on and off at my request, just
hesitating a minute or so before going up a few times.
After about 15 minutes total of practice, Jacks was
putting herself onto the trailer with my staying outside
by the back door!

HAY:
Jackie/Pepper's dad donated some hay, but it was
enough to get them through the winter. Any hay
donations -- or funds to help us pay for hay -- will
help us get through until spring grass grows in again.
GRAIN:
Jackie's former mom, way back when she was a yearling,
has become her feed sponsor. Thank you so much, Mary EB,
for caring about this horse you knew so many years ago
and for your generosity.
MED: Jackie's former mom is also her med sponsor.
Thank you so very much, Mary.

| "Before
CWER:" The results of our search for Jackie's
history...as posted on the CWER email list. |
...Here's a brief rundown
on Jackie...
- 19 years old
- AQHA registered
- very fit, a little under weight
(common for older horses this time of year)
- arrived healthy, current on
shots/vaccinations/farrier care/coggins
- obviously rides western, told she
ran barrels/poles/cutting/reining at some time
before her most recent owner
- most recent owner just trail rode
with her, said she always did well
- very attached to Twilight and
protective over Twlight's baby, Pepper.
- broad chested, strong, stocky
classic AQHA build, very rich chestnut/sorrel
coloration, nice markings
- "been there done that"
type of personality -- knows what manners are once
reminded that poor behavior isn't acceptable
- loads herself on our
slant-load 3 horse trailer (you don't need to get in
the trailer with her)
- told she ties but we've not done so
yet
- Owner had severe financial
emergency, could not care for the horses through the
winter, donated all 3 to us -- not health problems
or behavior problems that caused him to let them go.
They were living in nice conditions and were well
fed and cared for when we picked them up. A
refreshing change for us!
OK, so that's a brief run down on this
very pretty, stocky, registered mare.
Tonight, I had a bit of free time, so I wanted to
start a process we try to do with every
horse...contacting every former owner we know of (on
their papers, on their coggins forms, whatever), to
try to get history on the horse. I read down the list
of former owners and, to my surprise, one name looked
VERY familiar to me. I opened Crosswinds' supporter
database, and low and behold, Jackie's 2nd owner ever
is a CWER member. In fact, Mary became a member in
2007 -- the year Jackie came to CWER. (That seemed
almost spooky!) I left Mary a voicemail and continued
my search...Mary called back shortly and we got to
talk for a while. (She was so worried for Jackie, and
thrilled to hear she is doing well.)
I could make you all laugh with the
long version of my hour worth of phone calls, but
here's the short version...
- an older gentleman owned Jackie as
a foal, and apparently did no treat her kindly; (she
was born in 1989)
- Mary E.B. bought Jackie from him
and he was 'training' Jackie and Mary both. Both
horse and owner were green. Owner #1 was forceful
with Jackie, she got scared, broke a lead, and
ran away from Mary. Horse and owner were both
frightened, owner #1 convinced Mary to sell Jackie
in Dec 1990 at 18 months old.
- Joanna M owned Jackie for about 12
years with her husband, Richard. Richard trained
Jackie. Joanna was a weekend horsewoman who rode
Jackie when she had time, and they bred Jackie to a
paint gelding, got a breeding stock (solid color)
foal who looked just like Jackie named Sanbar.
(Richard, Joanna's husband, called the mare MAGIC,
not Jackie.) They got divorced and the horses were
sold.
- Jeannine registered Jackie next.
We've not been able to reach her yet, but from what
we've been told by later owners, apparently Jeannine
adored this mare, rode her everywhere -- including
thru the drive thru at Hardies in Danville! She fell
on hard times, and sold Jackie to Factory Outlet
Ranch. Maybe bought her back then had to sell her
again? that part's unclear.
- Todd at Factory Outlet Ranch was
very nice and talked with me also. He said Jackie
was a very sweet mare and a nice trail horse, could
be very quick. Said Jeannine did do some barrels
with Jackie but nothing significant or super
competitive. He sold her to Fred B.
- Fred B bought Jackie for his
teenage daughter, who rode her for a summer and
liked the mare. Jackie was "a bit heavy on the
bit" and would occasionally take advantage of
the daughter. was never mean or dangerous, just a
bit stubborn and could trick you. He sold Jackie.
- Not sure who was involved in
between...then she and Twilight and Pepper ended up
living with Joe, who trail rode both mares and then
donated the 3 of them to us...
SO! That's what we know about
Jackie as of today. She's a nice size, well built,
muscular, terrific 19yo mare. she's got volumes of
trail riding experience, and can be fairly quick.
She seems to be perfectly sound, neck reins for an
experienced rider, single reins for an English
rider. She can lean a little heavily on her bit for
the average western rider but makes nice contact in
an English handset. She's had at least one foal. no
one had any health problems during her 19 years.
We're looking for a great forever
home for this darling mare. She would love to move
on to her new home with Ginger, her dearest friend
in the world. both mares have photos and more info
on our website at cwer.org .
