Skills Report Card!
Overall Health: C-
10/15/11 -- arrived badly emaciated (starved), body score of 1.5 which means "bare minimal body fat and muscle, key internal organs could fail."
Enjoy the facebook photos as she progresses.
10/15/11: Magic arrived, with Fancy, today. Magic is a 15-month old gaited filly of unknown breeding, and is badly starved. She is not quite so thin as Serge or Twiggy were on arrival, but very close, and her being so young makes it even more significant. Her little body will have to figure out how to regain fat stores, build needed muscle, grow a winter coat, and also allow her young body to grow again. It is very likely she will be at least somewhat stunted due to what she has suffered.
Apr '12: It's been a long, tough winter. Magic never shed her winter coat from '10/11, and didn't grow a great coat for winter 11/12. She gained some weight but not as much as hoped, and has been battling an ulcer from her severe neglect in her past.

WEIGHT:
Fall 2011: 350 lbs approximated
Apr '12: 529 lbs, per livestock scale
Ground manners: B+ Magic, currently, is very well behaved on the ground. Easily leads with and without leadrope. Easily caught, even when loose on fresh grass. Handles her hooves fairly well, has basic balance. Was exceptionally good for the vet. Seems Ok with being groomed but not "dying to get brushed". We'll see how much this might change as she gets her strength and energy back.
4/1/12: Magic now very much enjoys grooming and especially getting her itches scratched!!
Basic Riding Skills:
N/A
Of course, this filly is nowhere near riding training ready. It will likely be summer 2013 or later before we consider riding her.
Don't miss her YouTube videos...IN THE FUTURE
Ideal Career: NOT YET It will be 6-9 months before Magic is well enough to begin thinking about even simple arena ground work. We have no idea where her strengths will be at this stage.
Stall Manners: B+ Magic arrived respectful but slightly nervous in a stall; as of day 8 she is already improving significantly. She is unsure what you want from her yet, but is trying to please. She has already realized blankets are a good thing, and will put her own head through a 'turtleneck style' blanket!
Trailering Skills: A Magic loaded well, and travelled calmly. She essentially loaded herself, to go with her friend Fancy, and unloaded with ease.
Companionism/Pasture: B 10/22/11: Magic is currently only pastured with Fancy. She has been temporarily placed with Sandy and did ok, but Fancy was very upset and calling to her. We will gradually work to separate the two mares, as Fancy will not be able to go into the big pasture this fall, and we need to get Magic there asap.
Routine Medical Care: B+ 10/22/11: Magic had a basic exam with Doc Jenn of Prairie Rivers Equine, and behaved very well. She was mildly nervous at having her teeth checked and her temperature taken, but was calm and listened well to her handlers. Magic will not be well enough to do a full dental exam and any needed floating to repair damage from her starvation, not at least for another 6-8 weeks.

Overview:

Magic arrived a 1.5 on the body conditioning scale -- 0 is dead; below 1.0 is major organ failure and unlikely to be recovered.
She will take 6-12 months of careful feed management and expensive care to rehabilitate and return to a level of preparing her for a new career. Because she is so young, her body will have to make difficult decisions - calories to winter haircoat? to hoof development? to fat stores? to muscles? then, finally, to growth? She is almost certainly going to be at least slightly stunted. Luckily, her body should recover in all other areas. It will be a VERY expensive 6-9 months at least.
Please will you donate to help us to help Magic?
Adoption Terms: 4/1/12: Magic is now well enough to be adopted by someone able to allow her to grow up and properly mature. She is at an acceptable weight although still thin.

Magic's adoption fee will be determined after her riding basic training is completed, and may be increased over time as she acquires more training and shows more skill in particular disciplines. If an adopter wishes to take her home prior to being at riding training stage, we would discuss that possibility with the right adopter.

Please see our AdoptionQnA pages for details of how to adopt.

HISTORY:

We dont know the background of Magic's owners; only that we received a call from a concerned neighbor. A group that was apparently trying to start a horse rescue had 20+ horses, most or all in VERY poor condition. We and another rescue received the worse cases which the owners surrendered, so animal control was not involved.
Magic needs to get back to the hard work of growing, but first her body needs to fix all the weaknesses from the starvation; our vet is confident we will be able to resolve these issues for her. It will simply take time...and funds....
Enjoy the facebook photos as she progresses.

Sponsorship:  Magic needs medical sponsorship! Estimated costs:

  • FEED SPONSOR: Please consider sponsoring Magic. She will need a very specialized diet -- focused around Purina Amplify fat-based feed and Purina Enrich mineral balancer totalling, $150 per month -- requesting 3 people to each pledge $50 per month for 6-12 months. Next, she will need a skin/coat supplement to try to eliminate the rain rot and get SOME winter coat growth, at least $100 worth of Platinum Performance.

  • $100 initial vet exam.
  • vaccinations -- We wont consider vaccinations until she is in bettrp hysical condition. She will need basic plus booster shots, totalling $100.
  • $150 dental work and full power float -- hope to be healthy enough to do this in December 2011. She may need specialty work to resolve the damage to her front teeth, we won't know until we get there.
  • $100 winter blanket(s). We will see what we have that fits her, then order whatever she needs.
  • $200 multiple chiropractic and accupuncture treatments in winter 2011/spring 2012 to help her get past any stunting in her growth
  • She may also need medications, and other supplements for his recovery
  • Farrier care: she receives farrier care here at CWER by our own Mike Cross, unless something unusual would be found that requires treatment.

  • Worming: We will test stools and treat as needed. We will do fecals on her every 8 weeks until we are confident her system remains clean as do our other horses. (We no longer rotational deworm; instead we do stool samples and worm those who are needed and only with what they need.)

Bloodlines:  Unknown, breed unknown, "gaited" but no idea if MFT, TW, etc.
