Skills Report Card!
Overall Health: A (excluding soundness) Stormy arrived, in excellent health. She is fit and healthy, at a good weight, in good muscle tone.
She needed dental work, which was completed for her on 1/17/2011. She had sharp hooks on her molars which created "cold sores" inside her cheeks which we are allowing time to heal.
Her vaccinations and other basic care are current.
Ground manners: A On arrival, Stormy was a little excitable, but well mannered. She leads easily in just a halter, and is easily haltered and unhaltered without fuss.
As of spring 2011, Stormy is one of our best mannered and easiest to handle horses for the volunteers, including beginners and special needs children.
Basic Riding Skills:
SEMI-RETIRED
We are told Stormy has ridden with her owner the past several years. We will update this status as soon as she has had her first ride at CWER. As of 1/18, we have completed most of her basic pre-riding assessments and find her to be exceptionally well behaved about saddling, and confident and well mannered in the roundpen. We are waiting for her mouth to recover from her dentistry prior to working on bridling. For now, we are doing ground driving exercises in the hackamore.
May 2011 -- Stormy has had soundness issues all winter, which are intermittent. She will be comfortable, sometimes for several weeks at a time, then will become sore without obvious cause. Our vet believes the core issue is a combination of her stocky build with fairly small hooves, and her having underrun heels which puts more pressure still on the tender bulbs of the back of her hooves. Our vet suggests corrective shoeing to start and then very regular care to bring her hooves more upright, which over time may bring her completely sound. At our facility, we are not set up to be able to keep her in corrective shoes (our pasture grounds are too hard and rough, and she will end up tearing off her shoes.)
Ideal Career: Semi-Retired See the riding notes above.
Stall Manners: B+ Stormy has been very well mannered during her limited stall time. As of 1/18, she is staying in a stall with a "run" out a rear door to a paddock and the outdoor roundpen. She shares this space with a pony that is fostering with us, and behaved VERY well.
In March 2011, Stormy moved into the main pasture with the other CWER herd members. She has been exceptionally well behaved in the pasture, coming in and out, and while stalled. She gets mildly anxious to leave when her pasture friends go out before she does, but otherwise she is exceptionally well behaved when stalled.
Trailering Skills: A Stormy loaded with ease and trailered well on her travel to CWER from her former home.
Companionism/Pasture: A As of 1/18/11, Stormy is still residing in the Cheveyo memorial paddock with Lilly, a pony who is fostering with us. Stormy is very respectful with Lilly, shares her hay easily, and has great manners around Lilly and other horses at the farm.
As of March 2011, Stormy moved to the main pasture and has been exceptionally well behaved. She tends to stay out of any drama, and is a good partner and companion to high strung and very mellow horses alike.
Routine Medical Care: B Stormy was nervous with needles when she received her dental care.
Stormy was managable and did well for her dentistry, and is recovering well.
She is also well behaved for the farrier.

Overview:

Stormy is an adorable POA pony mare with a GREAT personality. She loves attention, and is very sweet. She has had one owner most of her life, and the two were clearly close to each other. Stormy is VERY comfortable to ride when she is sound.
Adoption Terms: Stormy is currently considered semi-retired, and is available as a companion/semi-retirement riding horse (easy rides on soft footing.) It is very likely that corrective shoeing in better conditions would improve Stormy's hoof issues and she may become fully sound for regular riding. As a companion horse, she has a $0 adoption fee.

Her adoption fee will change if we are able to solve her soundness challenges and return her to the regular riding refreshers.

Please see our AdoptionQnA pages for details of how to adopt.

HISTORY:

Stormy's owner had to relocate and could not take Stormy to her new home. She had owned Stormy for quite some time, and was Stormy's only rider. They were clearly close to one another, and Stormy was loved and well cared for at her home.
Winter 2010/11 Stormy took a BAD fall on the ice during the terrible "icemageddon" storms here. Stormy needed 2 chiropractic adjustments to solve this problem for her, and she now has no residual problems with her low back or her hip.
Spring 2011 Stormy has had an issue with soreness in her left front hoof and shoulder. We initially attributed it to the ice fall, but it has not recovered as her other isuses did with chiropractic and massage. Our vet believes that the real issue is a combination of her having very underrun heels (so her weight is primarily on the sensitive heel & bulb instead of across the bar off the hoof meant for that load) and her way of moving - with the 2 exacerbating each other. Doc Jenn feels it is very possible that she would come and remain sound in corrective shoes after a few trims and corrective adjustments; however, we are unable to do corrective shoes here, as she would tear them off in our rough pasture conditions.

Sponsorship:  Stormy needs medical sponsorship!

  • FEED SPONSOR: Please consider sponsoring her. Stormy arrived at an ideal weight and is eating $40/month of Purina Enrich mineral supplement.

  • Transport to CWER:   $100

  • Basic intake vet care: $75

  • Dental care: $200 - completed 1/17/11.

  • Farrier care: she will receive farrier care here at CWER by our own Mike Cross, unless something unusual is found and requires treatment.

  • Worming: We will test her stools and treat as needed. Any base issues will be resolved immediately, then dewormed only as required by the fecal tests.

Bloodlines:  (bloodlines below, courtesy of www.allbreedpedigree.com.)

We do not have Stormy's parentage or bloodline history. It is very likely that she could be 'hardship registered' as a POA due to her coloration, mottled skin, and spots, if a new owner chose to do so.
